Heavy police presence as Tsengwa murder suspects appear in court

There is a strong police presence outside the Knysna Magistrates Court in the Western Cape as two suspects are expected to appear in connection with the death of former Mayor Aubrey Tsengwa.

The suspects face conspiracy to commit murder charges after Tsengwa was shot and killed while in his car last Wednesday evening.

The suspects also face three attempted murder charges in connection with his three passengers who were in the car with him.

Scores of African National Congress (ANC) members have gathered outside the court.

Tsengwa was the Ward 8 ANC councillor.

Police Spokesperson Novela Potelwa says, “Two suspects aged 39 and 46 are expected to appear in court in Knysna on Monday following their arrest on charges of conspiracy to commit murder after the shooting of Knysna councillor and former Mayor Aubrey Tsengwa on Wednesday evening.” Potelwa says, “The arrests were effected by a team of SVC (Serious Violent Crime) detectives, crime intelligence, local police, combat team and the drone unit and local police.

SAPS (South African Police Service) management reinforced deployment to the area with a view to apprehending those behind the shooting incident.” Meanwhile, investigations also continue into the Thursday night killing of two other people in Knysna.

One is a former ANC councillor and the other a taxi boss.
