US eyes ad campaign to boost Afrikaner refugee applications: reports

The United States administration of President Donald Trump is reportedly considering spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on an advertising campaign in South Africa to encourage more white Afrikaners to seek refugee status in the United States.

A report by The Guardian reveals that applications have fallen below Washington’s expectations, despite President Donald Trump’s claims that Afrikaners face racial persecution.

The proposed campaign comes as relations between Pretoria and Washington remain strained over South Africa’s domestic and foreign policies.

According to The Guardian , a State Department proposal outlines spending $335, 000 on research and advertising to establish why more Afrikaners are not applying for refugee status.

The plan includes focus groups in several South African towns, a survey of one thousand Afrikaners and a six-month digital campaign, largely in Afrikaans.

Washington has prioritised Afrikaner resettlement while restricting refugee admissions from elsewhere.

The Trump administration maintains that white South Africans face government-sponsored racial discrimination, allegations Pretoria has strongly rejected.

The proposal has not yet been confirmed as approved, but highlights Washington’s continued focus on Afrikaner migration to the US.
