Bail bid for Sharpeville tavern attack accused resumes

The bail application of accused number one, Mandla Siphelo, in the tavern attack case is expected to be heard on Thursday in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court.

Siphelo is one of six accused in a case relating to a tavern attack in Tshepiso , Sharpeville, in June, where patrons were allegedly assaulted and three women raped.

The bail applications of his co-accused, George Buthelezi, Brian Chauke and Tsietsi Makae, were heard on Tuesday.

All six accused have pleaded not guilty to the charges they face.

The six accused face charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, crimen injuria, rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Accused number two, Snyman Makgajane, and accused number three, Nxoni Moyo, have abandoned their bail applications.

They are accused of robbing and assaulting patrons.

Makgajane allegedly raped three women during the incident.

The accused also allegedly went to the tavern owner’s house, where they shot him twice and robbed him.

The state is expected to respond to the affidavits of Buthelezi, Chauke and Makae on Thursday.
