DA calls for accountability over Bronkhorstspruit water crisis
The Democratic Alliance (DA) says the City of Tshwane needs to be held accountable for the operational failure over the Bronkhorstspruit water crisis.
This comes after 400 cases of illness were reported, with the water from the Bronkhorstspruit Treatment Works declared unfit for human consumption.
In light of this, the DA has lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission against the City.
DA Tshwane Mayoral Candidate Cilliers Brink accuses the municipality of ignoring the signs in order to make money through the deployment of water tankers.
“Within the financial year in which Nasiphi Moya was elected, water tanker spending to formalised areas, not informal settlements but places that should already have clean, reticulated water in their taps, increased to R777 million.
Now, immediately, when the municipality decided to inform the public that the water was undrinkable in Bronkhorstspruit and that they hadn’t chlorinated it for three weeks, the first emergency decision that was made was to deploy water tankers.
That is the easiest way for what we believe to be the water tanker mafia to make money.” RELATED VIDEO | Bronkhorstspruit | Water supply is a risk to residents’ health: David Mahlobo
