Car set alight during protest outside Constitutional Court

A vehicle has been set alight and police have fired rubber bullets outside the Constitutional Court in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The incident occurred as protesters led by controversial media personality Ngizwe Mchunu marched from Kwa Mai Mai in the city’s CBD to the court.

The marchers say that while they welcome the Home Affairs Department withdrawing the asylum seekers’ applications, that does not nullify the ConCourt ruling.

No injuries or arrests have been reported.

Mchunu has warned that further action could follow, including a planned shutdown of Johannesburg next Tuesday in protest against the apex court’s ruling on immigration-related matters.

He says unity is crucial during this time.
