Ramaphosa rejects claims ANC plans to use asylum seekers in elections

African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa has rubbished claims that the party has brought in asylum seekers to bolster its support at the local government elections as fake news.

Speaking during the Black Wednesday Commemoration that took place today in Sandton, Ramaphosa cautioned against the spread of disinformation and fake news.

He used the event to engage with journalists and editors from various media houses.

A fake news post has been circulating on social media claiming that asylum seekers are being registered to vote and, in turn, will vote for the ANC.

Ramaphosa says such posts are fake.

“There’s just no way that the ANC would get asylum seekers to vote for it.

There’s just no way.

It’s a rubbish story.

It does not exist.

We never want to do something like that, and (it just shows you) the dangers of these social media platforms, where the story is planted by an individual who is not accountable to anyone and it starts spreading,” says Ramaphosa.
