IEC reiterates not opening Nomination System for any political party

The Electoral Commission (IEC) has reiterated that it will not open the Candidate Nomination System for any political party or independent candidate after the cut-off date.

This was communicated by the IEC at a briefing held earlier Wednesday in Centurion.

On Monday, the ANC released a statement citing that they had submitted several of their candidates’ names before last week’s Friday 5 pm deadline, however they claimed to have experienced technical difficulties with the IEC’s candidate-capture system and as a result affected a number of its remaining entries.

The Commission maintains that they will not open the system for any political party or independent candidate as adequate time was given to candidates to use the system ahead of the deadline.

The Commission Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo explains, “The ANC requested confirmation that their candidates are not submitted in certain municipalities because they wanted to be sure that indeed that was the case, and the commission so confirmed.

The commission has never entertained any possibility to open the system for any one party, and as our statement indicated yesterday, the commission does not have any intention, even at this point, to open the system.
