Public Protector flags concerns at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital
The Office of the Public Protector says persistent medication shortages, staff vacancies, and poor communication with patients remain a concern at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka raised the issues during an unannounced visit to the hospital as part of Good Governance Month.
She says while remedial action from previous investigations is being implemented, the Gauteng Health Department needs to speed up the filling of vacant posts.
Speaking on the repair work at the hospital, which was damaged by a fire in 2021, Gcaleka, says, “The progress is in LINE with the implementation plan that has been submitted by the department.
Work has been done progressively.
However, the CEO indicated that there were some delays that might affect the implementation date, but we will verify that with the province.
As things stand, we are hopeful that the site will be handed over as communicated by the province on the 2nd of December.” Related Video | Report on Charlotte Maxeke hospital failed repairs: Reporting: Culvin Mabasa
