Acting Police Commissioner to assess police deployments in Soweto
Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane is expected to visit Soweto this Thursday evening to assess the situation and provide an update on police deployments in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, as well as other identified hotspots.
This comes amid violence in Durban and Soweto, including confrontations with foreign nationals who own shops and protests outside home affairs offices.
Dimpane will also outline the operational measures being implemented to maintain law and order, protect communities, and respond to emerging security threats.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says no one has been arrested so far following earlier clashes between foreign nationals and locals.
“They marched to Home Affairs; this incident happened after the march.
We have crime intelligence on the ground…there were clashes between the community and some foreign nationals.” There have been protests in a number of cities—mostly regarding the processing of asylum applications and emigration concerns.
