Wheelchair-bound man dies in shack fire in Katlehong

SABC News ·

A 38-year-old man who was wheelchair bound, has died in a shack fire in Zonkizizwe Extension Six in Katlehong in Ekurhuleni.

Firefighters responded to the blaze on Friday night, but the man was found deceased beneath the collapsed corrugated iron sheets after the fire was extinguished.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Service (EMS) spokesperson William Ntladi says investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

“On arrival, members of the community were found busy with a bucket brigade system, desperately extinguishing the blaze.

Firefighters used attack lines from the fire engine and successfully managed to bring the blaze under control, desperately striving to rescue a wheelchair-bound man who was reported to be still trapped inside the shack.

During the search, rescue and recovery after the blaze was extinguished, the man’s burnt body was found under the corrugated metal sheets.

Paramedics attended to him, and he was declared dead on scene.

The scene was officially handed over to the South African Police Service officers.”
