Suspect arrested for selling illegal medicine

SABC News ·

Western Cape police have cautioned the public from illegally buying expired medication from street vendors.

Western Cape Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk says police have nabbed a street vendor at the Nyanga Junction Transportation Hub on the Cape Flats for illegally selling medication out of boxes.

“Upon closer inspection, it was found that some of the medicine was past its expiry date, which poses a huge health risk and can be fatal if consumed.” The suspect was arrested and, during questioning, could not state where he obtained the medication.

The public is strongly urged to refrain from purchasing medicine from unregistered individuals and premises and is instead encouraged to obtain medication from pharmacies and authorised suppliers which operate from within a controlled environment.

The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrates ‘ Court for contravening the Medicines Act once charged.
