WATCH: Westbury residents trapped in daily barrage of gang gunfire

Residents of Westbury in Johannesburg are subjected to non-stop gunfire.

Residents of Westbury in Johannesburg continue to live in fear as gangs hold them hostage, with continuous gunfire ringing out.

At the weekend, a video of gunshots ringing out in the area went viral across social media platforms.

It is not known where the original video came from, but comments on social media confirmed this was “every day in Westbury”.

In the three-minute video, multiple gunshots can be heard. The camera is facing a block of flats, and suspects can be seen running around.

One of the voices in the video also claims they can hear gunfire from a .38 revolver.

Screams from afar can also be heard, and then someone in the background says: “Someone was shot. They’re screaming. Someone was shot”.

Then suddenly, more gunfire that sounds like a machine gun starts going off. The video zooms in on a suspect wearing a white cap and grey top shooting.

Residents in Westbury have been highlighting their frustrations as they continue to live in fear as gangsters take over the area.

On Saturday, August 15, three people were killed and two others injured in a mass shooting in the neighbouring area, Newclare.

Sophiatown police opened three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder for investigation.

Police entered the premises and found three victims, aged between 18 and 20, lying inside the flat. The victims were declared deceased at the scene by paramedics.

Further investigation revealed that two other victims, aged 18 and 23, had also sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to hospital for further treatment.
