Latest Spider-Man swings into the $US2 billion club

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has smashed through the $US2 billion ($A2.8 billion) barrier at the worldwide box office.

The earnings put Tom Holland's latest adventure as the web-slinging superhero into one of cinema's most exclusive clubs after just three weekends.

The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios blockbuster, starring Holland, 30, in his fourth solo movie as Peter Parker, alongside his wife Zendaya, 28, has now earned $US785.8 million ($A1.1 billion) in North America and $US1.236 billion ($A1.750 billion) internationally for a worldwide total of $US2.022 billion ($A2.863 billion).

The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, opened in the United States on July 31 and has become only the eighth movie in history to cross $US2 billion globally.

The achievement makes Brand New Day the second-fastest film ever to reach $US2 billion, behind only Marvel's Avengers: Endgame, which crossed the threshold after 11 days in 2019.

The latest Spider-Man has dominated cinemas since its release, opening with $US355 million ($A503 million) in North America and $US932 million ($A1.3 billion) worldwide before passing $US1 billion ($A1.4 billion) globally after only six days.

It has now overtaken its immediate predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which finished its theatrical run with $US1.9 billion ($A2.7 billion) after being denied a release in China.

Brand New Day follows Peter after the events of No Way Home, in which a spell cast by Doctor Strange resulted in the world forgetting Peter Parker existed.

He is living alone and fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man while watching his former friends continue their lives without remembering him.

Brand New Day has become the eighth-biggest worldwide release in box office history, joining a $US2 billion club which includes Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War.

The film remained No 1 in North America for a third consecutive weekend, taking another $US70 million ($A99 million) as its domestic total climbed to $US785.8 million ($A1.1 billion).

Its performance has also made Brand New Day Sony Pictures' highest-grossing movie worldwide, while the wider North American box office is running almost 20 per cent ahead of the equivalent point in 2025.

With Brand New Day already at $US2.022 billion ($A2.863 billion), its continuing theatrical run leaves it chasing Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $US936 million ($A1.3 billion) North American total, while Avatar remains the worldwide record-holder with approximately $US2.9 billion ($A4.1 billion).
