Australian mother of two identified among 38 people still missing in Nepal-Tibet disaster

An Australian woman missing near the Nepal-Tibet border has been identified as Renee, a mother of two who was returning from a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash.

Renee was last heard from inside the immigration building at Gyirong Port when catastrophic flash flooding and mudslides tore through the region, according to a fundraiser launched for her family.

“Our beloved sister Renee is still missing from the Tibet-Nepal border after the devastating events from this week,” the GoFundMe page reads.

“She was on her way home from a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and last heard from in the immigration building at the Gyirong port at the time of the disaster.”

The August 26 disaster caused widespread destruction across the Nepal-Tibet border region, sweeping away buildings and severely damaging roads and other critical infrastructure.

Five Australians initially reported missing have since been located, but 38 remain unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue. One was located in Nepal, one in Tibet and three were outside the disaster zone.

Renee’s loved ones are continuing to pray for her safe return as her partner Shaun and their daughters Lily and Ruby face an agonising wait for news.

“We continue to pray for her, the Nepalese people, and those also still to return to the safety of their homes and families,” the fundraiser reads.

The family is now considering how it could reach the affected area in the coming weeks, with the fundraiser aiming to help cover any associated expenses.

The fundraiser has amassed more than $65,000 in donations as of Wednesday afternoon.

Organiser Clair Spry said there had been no further news about Renee but thanked donors for their “kind and incredibly generous donations”.

“We are overwhelmed with the support for Shaun and the girls,” she said.

“I imagine some of you don’t know Renee directly, and you should know what a generous, thoughtful, and beautiful person she is- you would understand that the moment you met her.”
