One of Origin’s greatest try-scorers revealed as Slater’s Maroons’ successor

A successor for Billy Slater at the helm of the Queensland Maroons has been confirmed, with Darius Boyd called upon to lead the State of Origin side in their quest for redemption next year.

It marks a remarkable rise for one of the series’ greatest try-scorers, who crossed the white line 17 times in 28 appearances for his state.

Since retiring from the NRL at the end of the Brisbane Broncos’ ill-fated wooden-spoon season in 2020, Boyd has slowly built himself into a coach – working as an assistant at his former club under Kevin Walters, while spearheading Queensland’s under-19 outfits to back-to-back wins in 2025 and 2026.

Boyd has blossomed from a shy but talented fullback who has opened up since the end of his playing days on his struggles with mental illness to become a confident speaker and coach, with his ascension to the Maroons’ top job a stunning culmination of his progress.

He has signed on for two years, as Queensland seek to wrestle back the shield after this year’s 2-1 series defeat to New South Wales – sealed with their game three loss at Suncorp Stadium.

“It’s a privileged position, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity. I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well,” Boyd said.

“My job is to build on the legacy created by many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us.”
