NFL superstar Jalen Hurts allowed to play despite blood clot diagnosis that has since ended his season
Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the season after the discovery of blood clots in his lungs.
The NFL superstar, who earns over AU$70m a year, was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in the lead-up to the Eagles’ clash against Jacksonville in London on October 11.
He was reportedly in hospital until 4am on the morning of the game and stayed awake for close to 36 hours straight before taking the field as the Eagles crashed to a 19-17 loss.
Hurts was then allowed to fly back home before being ruled out for the weekend’s clash against Caroline.
The Eagles and Hurts’ agent released more information on his condition on Monday. They said Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and a bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning a blood clot has traveled from the legs to the lungs.
His treatment involves blood thinners, and he won’t be allowed to participate in any football activities until he is off them.
“He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations,” their statement said.
The franchise have come under heavy criticism for their handling of the injury, questioning how he was allowed to take the field last week and then fly despite the discovery of the blood clot in his leg.
“That entire Eagles medical staff should be fired! He should not have been allowed to board that plane to London! He was complaining about the calf pain and they did nothing! And why did they wait to get to London before taking the first ultrasound!!?!?“ ESPN anchor Linda Cohn posted to social media.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni defended the medical staff’s handling of the situation.
“I lean on our guys in all those situations. I’m a football coach. I lean on our medical experts in every situation. I have full trust and full faith in them. It’s not just me that has major care for our players. It’s them, as well.”
The Eagles previously said Hurts was injured when he took a cleat to his calf area on October 4 in a game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Hurts informed the medical staff of the injury after practice on October 8. The Super Bowl 59 MVP was back at practice the next day before the team left for London to play Jacksonville.
Hurts was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis before further testing and monitoring revealed the deep vein thrombosis diagnosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emnoli.
