Drivers suffer serious injuries in single-vehicle collisions

Two drivers suffered serious injuries in single-vehicle collisions in Ottawa on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The first occurred just before 4 a.m. when an SUV left the road, rolled and came to rest upside down in a ditch near Cedarview Road and Lytle Avenue.

Ottawa Fire Services, in a social media post, said it was called to the scene by Ottawa police at about 3:47 a.m. After arriving, fire crews found the vehicle about 25 to 30 feet from the road, entangled in a livestock fence.

The lone occupant was trapped inside, with one arm pinned beneath the roof.

The fence and some trees were cut away before firefighters extricated the driver. Before the extrication began, crews used cribbing to stabilize the vehicle and brought forward a charged hose line and dry chemical extinguisher as safety precautions. Rescue jacks were then added to further secure the SUV.

According to an Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson, a male in his late teens was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

In the second crash, an adult male suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after his vehicle hit a “rock formation”, the paramedic spokesperson said, adding that Renfrew County paramedics also attended the scene.

Ottawa fire took a call from the OPP about that incident on Panmure Road at 6:40 p.m., stating in a news release that reports indicated the vehicle was in a ditch with the driver trapped.

At this location, firefighters used specialized tools to safely and quickly extricate the person.
