Anna Huang heads into weekend as low Canadian at CPKC Women’s Open

EDMONTON – Anna Huang will rue her 18th hole Friday if she ends up close to the lead by Sunday night. But through two days at the CPKC Women’s Open, the teenage talent is the low Canadian.

Huang shot a 2-under 68 Friday and sits inside the top 10 heading into the weekend at Royal Mayfair. It would have been a better effort had she not stumbled into the house with a double bogey on her final hole of the day.

Huang, twice a winner already this season on the Ladies European Tour, was 3 under through 10 holes on Friday and was firmly in the mix. She added another birdie on the par-4 16th before she struggled to get up-and-down on No. 18.

Huang said her putter was going to be the key thing she’d be working on over the next two days.

“I couldn't really get the speed and the line or any, and then also didn't feel too confident with my stroke,” Huang admitted. “I don't think (my game plan) changes, but I'm definitely going keep to being aggressive and keep to hitting (at) pins.”

Just play, we’ll handle the rest Genesis delivers five years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, whether at your doorstep or beside the fairway, so every drive remains effortless.

This marks the first time Huang has made the cut at the CPKC Women’s Open. She is gunning for her first Sandra Post medal as Low Canadian at her national open as Huang sits two shots ahead of Brooke Henderson heading into the weekend.

Huang will have some ground to make up over the next two days, however, as Miyu Yamashita sits at 14 under and set the tournament scoring record in the process.

“I think I'm pretty happy with how I played. Definitely left way too many putts out there, but I love chasing the leaderboard, so it's going to be a fun weekend,” Huang told Sportsnet.

In all, seven Canadians found the weekend with Maude-Aimee Leblanc, Savannah Grewal, and amateurs Michelle Xing, Clairey Lin, and last year’s Low Amateur winner Aphrodite Deng – who made six birdies and an ill-timed triple bogey on Friday – all making the cut.

The last time this many Canadians found the weekend at the CPKC Women’s Open was in 1996. The record number of homegrown talent to play all four rounds at their national open is 10 (1977).
