‘7 best fruits for fatty liver’: Gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi shares fibre-rich fruits to support liver health

Making mindful food choices can play an important role in supporting liver health, particularly for people dealing with fatty liver disease. Gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi, in his August 23 Instagram post, highlights seven fruits that can be included as part of a balanced, fibre-rich diet. “7 best fruits for fatty liver. I’m a liver specialist, so hit that follow button,” Dr Sethi said while sharing his recommendations. (Also read: Struggling to maintain calorie deficit? Dr Sethi placed apples first on his list, pointing to their pectin content. Pectin is a type of soluble fibre that can support digestive health. He suggested pairing an apple with a small handful of nuts for a balanced snack. “Apple is full of pectin. I like to pair an apple with a handful of nuts.”

Kiwi was his second recommendation, particularly for people who experience constipation . “Eat two kiwis a day if you are prone to constipation. And yes, the skin is edible,” he says. Kiwi provides fibre and can be eaten whole after being washed properly. However, people who are allergic or sensitive to kiwi should avoid it.

Raspberries are another fibre-rich fruit that can be easily incorporated into everyday meals. Dr Sethi suggested adding them to plain Greek yoghurt or oatmeal. “Add them to plain Greek yogurt or oatmeal,” he advised. The fruit can add natural sweetness and fibre without requiring additional sugar.

Blueberries also made Dr Sethi’s list. He pointed out that frozen blueberries can be a convenient and affordable alternative to fresh fruit. “Frozen blueberries are just as nutritious as fresh and are often more affordable.” They can be added to yoghurt, oatmeal or smoothies as part of a balanced meal or snack.

Pears are another source of dietary fibre , particularly when eaten with their skin. He recommends, “Eat them with the skin on for maximum fiber.” Keeping the skin on can increase the fibre content of the fruit, provided it is washed thoroughly before eating.

Although technically a fruit, avocado differs from many other fruits because it is relatively high in healthy unsaturated fats and low in sugar. Dr Sethi suggested using it as a spread instead of higher-saturated-fat options. “Spread avocado on whole grain toast instead of butter or cream cheese.” This combination can provide fibre, healthy fats and other nutrients, making it a more nutrient-dense breakfast or snack option.

Pomegranate rounded out Dr Sethi’s list. He suggested using the seeds as an addition to salads. “I like to sprinkle these on my salads.” Pomegranate seeds can add texture, flavour and nutrients to meals while helping increase overall fruit intake.

Dr Saurabh Sethi , MD, MPH, is a board-certified gastroenterologist and hepatologist based in California. He completed his MBBS at AIIMS, followed by an MPH from the University of Texas School of Public Health.
