Gana defends rescinding evidence leader amid EFF, ALPA court bid
The chairperson of Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee, Makashule Gana, says the committee will oppose legal challenges by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African Legal Professionals Association (ALPA) to its decision to rescind the recommendation of Advocate Thandazani Madonsela as Chief Evidence Leader.
The matter is before the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The EFF is asking the court to set aside the decision on the grounds that it was irrational.
However, Gana says the committee acted within the rules and established practices of the National Assembly throughout the process.
“As a chairperson of the committee, I have opposed both the applications by the EFF and the ALPA, and we’ll be making strong arguments in front of the judges of the Western Cape High Court.
We’ll tell the court that at each time, every step of the way, we acted within the rules of the National Assembly; we acted within the practices in the National Assembly when we received the decision recommending Advocate Madonsela.” VIDEO | Battle over decision to withdraw Impeachment Committee, evidence leader
