Second suspect in Reiger Park shooting claims he was ‘brutally’ assaulted by police
Second suspect in the Reiger Park shooting, Jamal Meyer, claims he was ‘brutally’ assaulted by police.
Jamal Meyer, the second person charged with the murder of two Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit officers and two women in Reiger Park , Ekurhuleni, told the court on Tuesday that he had allegedly been tortured by police and was experiencing chest pain, which required medical attention.
Meyer made his first court appearance at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested in the area on Sunday, August 16.
He was arrested by a multidisciplinary team following an intensive tracing operation.
Police have maintained that 23-year-old Reagan Cheslin Collis, who was arrested first in connection with the murders, is the alleged gunman responsible for the shootings.
The shootings claimed the lives of Anti-Gang Unit officers Constables Thapelo Tlomatsana, 29, and Sphiwe Sibeko, 28, as well as civilians Roleen Lessing and Jaydin Margerman.
Police said the officers were part of a crime-prevention team conducting patrols in the area when they heard gunshots.
They drove towards the source of the gunfire, where they were allegedly ambushed.
During Tuesday’s court appearance, the lawyer for the accused, attorney Samkele Kuzani, argued that Collis should be detained at a prison facility in Boksburg, which is closer to the court.
“Your Worship, looking at the procedure that must be followed and the law itself, currently, accused No. 1 (Collis) is not supposed to be detained at Modderbee,” Kuzani said.
He asked the court to order that Collis be brought back to the Boksburg Correctional Services.
Kuzani argued that while the parties may have reached an agreement outside court, the proper legal procedure had not been followed.
“Procedurally speaking, and legally speaking, looking at the law, accused No. 1 is not supposed to be detained at Modderbee,” he said.
However, state prosecutor Leswikane Mashabela told the court that an existing court order allowed Collis to remain at Modderbee until a specified date.
