Joburg reflects on itself at Design Week SA

SABC News South Africa ·

There’s something quietly radical about a city pausing for thought — even just for four days — to reflect on what it could become.

Design Week South Africa does exactly that.

It turns Johannesburg into a living brief, a city put up for examination, for reimagining, for honest conversation about what is and isn’t working, and who gets to decide.

The 2026 edition is running now, scattered across different corners of the city, and the programme carries an urgency that feels entirely in step with the moment.

This year’s conversations are anchored around a question that any Joburger can feel in their bones: can design actually fix this city? Not in the abstract, utopian sense — but practically.

Mobility, public space, safety, liveability.

The stuff of daily life that most residents navigate through frustration rather than ease.

The programme doesn’t pretend these are simple problems.

“There are incredible organisations working closely with local government on these exact issues,” says Margot Molyneux, founder of Design Week, speaking to the 2026 programme.

The festival creates space to think through them honestly — and in public.

The NowNow Competition hosts a dedicated discussion on the topic.

Young Urbanists asks, with a directness that’s almost refreshing, Why Is Sandton So Hard to Walk? And Morning Sessions puts it plainly with Can Design Fix Joburg? These aren’t rhetorical questions.

They’re invitations to sit with people who are actively working on answers.

There’s also an inter-city walkabout on the programme — because sometimes the most powerful design intervention is simply making people walk through their own city and actually look at it.
