Protests break out in Soweto, several vehicles torched

SABC News South Africa ·

Several vehicles have been torched in Soweto following clashes between foreign shop owners and locals.

It is not clear what led to the clashes.

Earlier today the community of Soweto marched to the Home Affairs offices in Orlando to demand the premises be closed.

Protests erupted after the Department of Home Affairs reopened South Africa’s asylum system to new applicants in compliance with the latest Constitutional Court judgment.

Joburg Metro Police spokesperson, Xolani Fihla says, “The Joburg metro warns of active road closures.

Motorists have been advised to avoid certain areas.

We do believe that eight cars have been set on fire.” WATCH | Scores of police officers have been deployed in Soweto following an outbreak of violence in the area.
