Media fraternity marks 49 years of Black Wednesday

Government has joined the media fraternity in commemorating Black Wednesday, also known as National Press Freedom Day.

October 19, 2026, marks 49 years since the apartheid regime banned a number of publications and detained journalists in 1977.

In a statement, government paid tribute to the journalists, editors, publishers and media workers who stood firmly against apartheid.

The statement says a free and independent media is vital to the democratic process as the country approaches the November fourth local government elections.
