Jhb Water issues caution amid contamination reports in Bezuidenhout

SABC News ·

Johannesburg Water says reports of contamination in Bezuidenhout Valley have not yet been confirmed.

The water entity is however urging residents not to drink or use tap water until laboratory tests confirm that the water is safe.

The warning follows repairs to a damaged water pipeline at the corner of 6th Street and 8th Avenue.

Johannesburg Water said the pipeline was damaged when a tree stump fell onto it during excavation work by a contractor replacing a sewer pipe.

The affected areas are along 8th Avenue at the intersections of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Streets.

“Johannesburg Water wishes to emphasize that water contamination in a few streets in Bezuidenhout Valley has not been confirmed.

The alert was issued as a precaution to affected residents.

Repairs are complete and teams are currently flushing the pipeline and collecting further samples for laboratory testing.

Supply will remain isolated until results confirm that the water is safe.

Residents in the affected streets must not use the water until official clearance has been issued by Johannesburg Water.

Alternative water supply will be supplied during this period.” says Nombuso Shabalala, Joburg Water spokesperson.
