Msunduzi municipal strike to continue: SAMWU
The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) says the strike by workers at the Msunduzi Local Municipality in Pietermaritzburg will continue until the municipality signs an agreement reached with employees.
The strike is a continuation of industrial action that was suspended in June after SAMWU and the municipality had reached a settlement on various employee grievances.
However, SAMWU Regional Secretary Bongi Gule says the municipality failed to sign the agreement, prompting workers to resume the strike.
She says the strike will end once the municipality meets their demands.
“It is continuing, and in June, we launched the strike, and we had eight items … that settlement we agreed with the employer, but it took us three weeks trying to get them on board so that they can sign the agreement, but it didn’t happen.
Thursday, we were on the table, and we agreed on 10 items and on those items we are hoping that we will sign that settlement agreement.
Once it has been signed, we will cancel the strike, and that is where we are at the moment.” X | @SABCNews | The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) has vowed to continue its strike in the uMsunduzi Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands until its demands are met. https://t.co/nfti8kMEY9 pic.twitter.com/ZrOyL0Jjmk — SABC News (@SABCNews) June 16, 2026
