PM calls on countries to ‘work together’ in UN mission
Anthony Albanese will defend international rules and make the case for co-operation to tackle global challenges when he rubs shoulders with fellow world leaders at the UN in New York.
“Australia’s prosperity and security depend on a strong global system, where nations work together, agreed rules are respected, and co-operation delivers shared benefits,” he said ahead of his departure on Friday.
“Australia is working to prevent online harm, particularly for our children, and I am proud that Australia is setting the world standard for digital safety.
“I look forward to joining other world leaders to discuss issues impacting our communities, including fuel costs, climate change and conflict, and how we can work together to find solutions.”
The plea for co-operation comes as Australia navigates an increasingly volatile world, with US President Donald Trump’s tariffs slapping pressure on traditional alliances and China’s rise spurring fears of a major conflict over Taiwan.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who is also heading to the UN, warned “sovereignty, prosperity and peace are not a gift or a given”.
“At the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week, Australia will continue our work to help shape outcomes that deliver for Australians, for our region and the world,” Senator Wong said.
“From building coalitions for the protection of aid workers and the rules countries like Australia rely on for our security and prosperity, to advocating for a better UN system fit for these uncertain times.
“Sovereignty, prosperity and peace are not a gift or a given – they must be built, maintained by all of us and protected across generations.”
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to stop by Apple headquarters in California for a sit down with the tech giant’s chief executive Tim Cook.
The pair will canvas Apple’s new parental control for children that partly “inspired” by Australian reforms, according to a government statement.
