Blue Jays call up Tiedemann ahead of game against Yankees

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is out of the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the New York Yankees, but one of the Toronto Blue Jays ' top prospects could make his MLB debut.

The Blue Jays activated left-hander Ricky Tiedemann hours before first pitch (3 p.m. ET / noon PT, Sportsnet and Sportsnet+), the team announced . Chase Lee was optioned to triple-A in a corresponding move.

Tiedemann was once the Blue Jays' No. 1 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, but injuries have derailed his development in recent seasons.

He went under the knife for Tommy John surgery in 2024, missed the entire 2025 season and then was slow to build up this season due to elbow soreness. He was activated from the minor-league IL on Aug. 5 and has made three relief appearances for triple-A Buffalo in the week since, allowing four runs and five hits with four strikeouts.

The news wasn't quite as good for Guerrero, who will be out of the starting lineup after taking a knee to the head in Friday's 3-1 win over New York.

Guerrero was injured on a chaotic play when George Lombard Jr.'s left knee hit the side of Guerrero's head as he slid toward third base, sending his helmet flying.

After the ball got by Lombard, Guerrero got to his feet and made his way home to score the Jays' first run of the game.

He winced after crossing home plate and was briefly tended to by trainer Jose Ministral before walking to the dugout and leaving the game.

"(He'll undergo) full concussion testing and things like that," Schneider said after the game. "You've always got to be a little bit careful and we'll see how he wakes up tomorrow and go from there."

Schneider is expected to give an update on Guerrero's status before Saturday's game.

The slugger is having a cold 2026 with a .263/.337/.356 slash line and just seven home runs — none of which have come at Rogers Centre.

Just one game out of the final wild-card spot in the American League, the Blue Jays will look to clinch a series victory over the Yankees on Saturday.
