Fire crews free woman stuck waist-deep in mud at Rebecca Pond

Ottawa firefighters conducted an unusual rescue operation on Sunday afternoon when they worked to free a 27-year-old woman who was trapped in the mud at Rebecca Pond in Kanata.

At about 3 p.m. on May 16, Ottawa Fire Services took a call from a man who said his daughter had been fishing from a plastic culvert when she lost her balance and fell into the pond. The caller said she had become stuck waist-deep and was sinking deeper each time she tried to move.

The woman’s father met fire crews at the entrance to a trail near the intersection of Old Second Line Road and Klondike Road, and from there they advanced 400 metres along the trail before locating the woman.

According to a news release, firefighters confirmed the woman’s left leg was trapped in the mud up to her hip, and a pike pole was used to stabilize her while crews dug around her leg to get it free.
