Cardoso gives injury update on Williams and Mokoena

SABC News ·

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is hopeful goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena will be available for Friday’s CAF Champions League clash against Wiliete.

The Brazilians host the Angolan outfit at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, in the return leg after playing out a goalless draw in Lubango at the weekend.

Sundowns were without their influential keeper Williams for the first encounter, while Mokoena was forced off with what appeared to be a serious injury.

Cardoso has since provided an update on both players following the medical team’s initial assessments.

“The maturity of a Williams and a Mokoena is important to sustain this team, which also has several young players.

We were afraid of conceding in the first leg, and there were periods of stress in the game.

At the moment, we do not know the extent of Mokoena’s injury because tomorrow he’ll be submitted to examinations.

As for Williams, we expect to recover him promptly.” With or without the duo, Cardoso insisted Sundowns need to play better at home in front of their fans to advance to the group stages.

Ricardo Goss deputised for Williams between the sticks in the first leg, and was able to keep a clean sheet and give Sundowns a good fighting chance at Loftus.
