Man arrested for allegedly offering Shoprite manager R10,100 bribe
A 52-year-old man has been arrested by the Hawks in connection with an attempt to bribe an admin manager at Shoprite Group.
The Western Cape spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, said the team was informed that an Admin Manager at the Shoprite Group attended a meeting at a certain restaurant with the suspect.
“It was during this meeting that the suspect performed acts of corruption by handing a plastic bag to the Shoprite admin manager, which contained several vaping devices together with something valuable, according to the suspect,” Vukubi said.
The ‘something valuable’ was later discovered to be a white envelope containing cash.
“It was later discovered that this something valuable was a white envelope containing cash to the amount of R5,000 and an extra R5,100 as a gratification to ensure that his company retains the contract at Shoprite,” Vukubi said.
The Hawks were immediately alerted, resulting in the suspect's subsequent arrest.
“He is expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court on August 19, 2026,’ Vukubi said.
