UPDATE: 30 arrested in KZN, Gauteng amid protests

Police say 25 people in total have now been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal, following the violence in the Durban CBD , over the last two days.

Those arrested include individuals identified as ringleaders, who allegedly threatened to disrupt the MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

Since Thursday, 14 vehicles were torched, two houses set alight and several shops were looted.

“The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has commended police officers and other law enforcement agencies for decisive, intelligence-led interventions to maintain law and order, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, where 30 people have been arrested since Thursday.

Of the 30 arrests, 25 were made in KwaZulu-Natal and five in Gauteng for offences including public violence, illegal gathering, obstruction and resisting arrest,” says Police spokesperson Nonkululeko Phokane .

Meanwhile, police say they will not allow threats, intimidation or unlawful conduct to undermine public safety.

Lt-Gen Dimpane commended law-enforcement agencies for what she calls decisive interventions to maintain law and order.

The suspect had gathered a group of people at King Dinizuku Park with the aim of staging a march.

Those who were with him managed to run away.

Police are reiterating that anyone who threatens to cause instability will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
