Who killed Zolani Tete? Boxing fraternity awaits answers after two arrests in murder
Eastern Cape police have arrested two men in connection with the murder of former world champion Zolani Tete and the attempted murder of a woman who was wounded in the shooting.
The Eastern Cape boxing fraternity has welcomed the arrest of two suspects in connection with Zolani Tete’s murder , but says the case will not be settled until police establish who pulled the trigger.
Boxing South Africa provincial manager Phakamile Jacobs said they welcomed the arrest of two people.
However, he said the boxing fraternity would be satisfied only when the person who pulled the trigger is identified.
Jacobs said police were still investigating the case and following up on other people who may have been involved in the killing.
“As yet, we are not at liberty to march on this, as the police are still following other people who are involved in this.
“So, at the moment, even the police have not yet revealed the motive behind it, and they are also saying they don't even want to reveal who these perpetrators are, or what their role was in this killing of Zolani.”
He said the boxing fraternity wanted police to identify the person who fired the fatal shots.
“But, as I'm saying, the police are still following other perpetrators who are involved in this, because we will be happy as boxing people and the boxing fraternity of South Africa, when the police announce the person who pressed the trigger over Zolani, then we will be happy.”
“As long as the person who pressed the trigger is still unknown, we are still going to hope that the South African police, as they acted swiftly to arrest these people even before the funeral, I congratulate them.
“They have done a good job, well done, well done. This is what we want from our South African police. When there is an incident like this, they act swiftly,” he said in an interview with the public broadcaster.
Eastern Cape police are continuing to appeal to anyone with credible information about Tete’s murder to come forward as investigations continue following the arrests.
Police arrested two men, aged 30 and 22, in Ku Gompo on Saturday in connection with Tete’s murder and the attempted murder of a 27-year-old woman who was wounded in the attack.
The arrests followed a swift, intelligence-driven operation involving multiple law enforcement units, police said.
